  • In love with your job

We all have things we love in life: our significant others, our mom and dad and especially our grandparents; our dog (I actually don't have one right now); the new car you always wanted and just bought, and that special place on this planet you have great memories at such as the shores of Oahu's west side, the River Seine in Paris, or the beautiful lakes in Minnesota where you spent summer camp.

One thing that I'm in love with which I can confidently say something only a small minority of people can also admit to...is my job.

I work on average as an intern from 5:30 am to 6 or 7 pm depending on the day. I work 6 days a week on the majority of my months. I sometimes have to stay until 10 pm depending on what's going on. Every 5 days, I have to work 30-36 hours straight from 6 am to lunchtime the next day. In the four months I've been an intern, there have only been 2 or 3 times where I was frustrated and hated what I was doing, wanting to leave. But I have never had a day where I came home NOT thinking how cool my job was and how much I loved it. I was done with my work today at 5:30pm and signed out to the resident here overnight but I'm blogging from the hospital computers because I'm still here - why? I'm not sure. Maybe I like to help the overnight resident out with random errands. Maybe I like to see my patients after they eat dinner. Maybe I like to follow up on tests and studies that I ordered for my patients earlier during the day. It also doesn't hurt to love the people you work with - the like minded people who struggle with you, the diverse backgrounds that converge upon the same training, and the wonderful personalities who love to party outside of work.

If you don't like your job or feel like your job is the greatest work decision for you, I think you're missing out big time. You owe yourself to work in a place and position you love. I mean geez, you're spending the majority of your waking moments there. Let's not be ridiculous here.

Don't get me wrong, once I get married I'll want to be home much much more often, but I'm still going to love my job.

  • My Medical Student

I have a third year medical student now. Her name's Wendy and she's a third year newly minted into working in the hospital. I think it's so cute how these medical students run around in short white coats and follow us residents. But then again I was one such student just four months ago.

I have to have Wendy follow me around the hospital and watch me write orders and see patients, but I'm also responsible for teaching which has been the most fun. I try to incorporate everything the residents who I thought were phenomenal did for me and what I wish some residents did for me.

They say teachers make a huge impact on your life and I totally agree. You always remember the funny teachers who also inspired you to want to do your best. The ones who just seemed to know everything. The ones you felt confident would help you learn and master the fine art of whatever it was you were learning. You remember the ones you admired and hoped to be just like them. The best part of teaching medical students is you don't get the students who don't try or lack interest, and you rarely get anyone who doesn't pay attention to what you're teaching. I couldn't deal with that classroom bullsh_t.

  • So I finally decided on where to go for my next vacation...Egypt. It was really a close decision between New Zealand, China, and Morocco, but I guess those others can wait. So I booked my 11 day journey last week...I can't wait!

The only bad thing is...it's going to take place in February. Sigh, something to get me through the winter months.

  • We prepped a guy to get ready for a heart transplant. He's been here for about a week and was about to be put on the list (hearts aren't really a common thing to find) until we found out he shot someone in the past...and hence got taken off the list.

Now we have to prep him for an artificial assist device.

    Sigh.

  • I should have left the hospital 2 hours ago. I'm still here because my signout keeps getting interupted with medical emergencies.

    I hate this. Seriously.

Sometimes I want to get the hell out of here, I mean is that so wrong? I've been up since 4 f-ing am and working non-stop.

The quality of life you have as a resident really depends on the fellow and residents who oversee you. It's no different from working at a fortune 400 company, something I left years ago.
